Question: I have been on Esbriet for 3 months and have developed a pain in my lower right groin-hip area. It can be so bothersome that it affects my gait. Could this be caused by the drug? What type of test do I need to figure this out? A Cat scan or MRI?

Brief Answer:
Esbriet may cause muscle and joint pains

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thank you for using Healthcare Magic. Esbriet may cause muscle and joint pains in about 1% of people who are taking it, so it is possible this is what is causing your symptoms. The fact that the pain is severe enough despite a fentanyl patch and oral narcotics so that your gait is affected suggests something significant going on, so I would not ascribe it to side effects without doing further evaluation first.

You could have a variety of conditions affecting your hip/groin area. Muscle inflammation, arthritis in the hip joint, a mass or other lesion pressing on a nerve, etc. The first step should be a physical exam, then probably the best test would be an MRI to look at the joint and whole area. The MRI would give a better picture of both soft tissue and bone lesions, and can tell if some kind of arthritis is present.

Don't assume it's the drug without getting further evaluation. Hopefully that's all it is, but contact your doctor and let him/her know what is going on and the severity of your pain so that appropriate action can be taken.

Hope this answers your query. If you have further questions, I would be happy to answer them.
