Posted on Sat, 18 Jun 2016
Question: My mom is 91. Often she sleeps in her recliner, almost sitting up straight. While sleeping , her left leg will jerk up 2-4 inches off the floor and then go back to the floor. It happens every 30 seconds. No pain associated . EEG was normal.

Legs Jerking during sleep can be mainly due to two causes
1. Seizures
2. Sleep twitch or Hypnagogic jerk

Since EEG is normal, it is Sleep Twitch or Hypnagogic Jerk. Your mother's condition is a well known entity called as Sleep twitch or Hypnagogic jerk.

Unless her sleep is disturbed, there is nothing to worry about this
