Posted on Thu, 7 Jul 2016
Question: Blood in urine, combined with considerably less than the usual output and some discomfort/slight pain at the base of the penis: is this cause to go to the ER or should I wait a day or two to see if symptoms desist?

Brief Answer:
If cannot see your physician immediately, should go to ER...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have gone through your medical history carefully and understood your concerns.

Let me recapitalize your case:
- blood in urine : can you tell the amount? do you notice fresh blood? or mixed with urine?
- less than usual output
- discomfort/slight pain at the base of the penis
- age : 72

Can you also tell for how long have you noted such symptoms?

If I was your caring doctor would advise an immediate evaluation through:
- urine analysis
- urine culture
- complete blood count
- abdominal ultrasound
- PSA
- digital rectal examination

in order to determine the right diagnosis.

So, you should see your physician as soon as possible. If you can't, then, should go to ER to run at least urine analysis and abdominal ultrasound immediately in order to start immediate treatment (prescription antibiotic).

For the moment, until you see your physician, I advise as following:
- increase water intake
- take cranberry supplement
- avoid salty/oily foods/drinks

Wish fast recovery!
