What Causes Black Toenail After Injury?

default
Posted on Tue, 17 Nov 2015
Question: I banged my toe playing tennis and the big toenail turned black and has now fallen off. It doesn't hurt, but wanted to know if there is something I should do to care for the toe as a new nail comes in.
It has been around a month since banding the toe. Right now I cleaned the area and put antiseptic ointment on it and covered the toe with a bandaid

Brief Answer:
there's not much you can do

Detailed Answer:
One month after the injury, there is no need for anything to do. There is no need for creams or banding, unless there's an open wound. In such a case you should visit your doctor because this is not normal after such a long time.

The new nail should be growing now. Sometimes the first nail after the injury may be a little weak and perhaps it will fell too. Just check to see whether the new nail grows normally. For example, a new nail may not grow normally and may injure the skin. In such a case you should consult your doctor, because the new nail may have to be removed for a better nail to grow.
