What Casues Constipation After Hip Replacement Surgery?

default
Posted on Wed, 23 Jul 2014
Question: Relative had hip replacement surgery 2 weeks ago, was severely constipated and finally got that corrected. He has not felt good since surgery. He had abdominal pains for few days and last night he passed out and brought to emergency room, the found a mass in his stomach they said could explode and be fatal, he was transferred to larger hospital and in ambulance he has turned yellow and stomach has beloated big time. He will go immediately to surgery. Is this an infection or obstruction or both? How serious is this and what do you think is causing his complications? Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Brief Answer:
In view of details I am inclined towards infection

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Since they said it can explode and in view of symptoms in postoperative patient, I feel its a abdominal abscess.

Also since there is bloating associated , there are good chances of bowel obstruction or sluggish bowel with possible spread of infection to peritoneal cavity.

This is surely serious and needs immediate aggressive treatment.Complication this can cause are bowel perforation, peritonitis, septicemia, bowel ischaemia, and internal bleed etc.

His doctor's might want to get ultrasound or CT scan of abdomen done , if that not already done.

He will also need good hospital care post surgery. I wish him the best.

Hope this helps. Please ask if there are doubts.Regards
