What Casues Back Pain While Swallowing Food?

default
Posted on Thu, 5 Jun 2014
Question: Hi. Sometimes when I am eating, I will swallow and have a stabbing pain in the middle of my back. It is like something is stuck and won't go down. The pain continues each time I swallow. If I can burp several times, it seems to ease the pain. In your opinion, is this somethig to be concerned about or is it simply acid reflux? When my back is out of place, it seems to be worse.

Brief Answer:
Possible GERD, eating habits, spine problems....

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,

From what you are describing, I can think over the following things:

- your eating habits (you are used to eat fast, which increases the chance to swallow air that makes it difficult to swallow. Once you burp, air gets out, so, the pain is relieved).

- GERD

- delayed stomach emptying, which aggravates GERD

- problems with your spine (arthritis, bulge, etc.)

If no problems with your spine and your are implying good eating manners, then, difficulty in swallowing you are experiencing is due to GERD.

Please take the medications for GERD as directed by your doctor and run regular check-ups with your GI specialist annually.

Hope it helped! Let me know if you need further clarifications!
