Brief Answer:
Type III tear needs a surgical repair.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The severity of labrum tear is assessed by the extent of tear and thickness of the tear. This can be assessed only after an MRI scan of the shoulder. You need to upload the complete MRI scan report so that I can help you better.
Type III SLAP tear consists of a bucket-handle tear, where the torn labrum could droop into the shoulder joint. This needs a surgical repair for proper healing.
I hope this answers your query.

Brief Answer:
Details below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
SLAP Type 1 tear is a partial tear and degeneration to the superior labrum, where the edges are rough and fray along the free margin, but the labrum is not completely detached. This can be treated conservatively.
A type VIII lesion involves a type II tear ( The superior labrum is completely torn off the glenoid, due to an injury. This type leaves a gap between the articular cartilage and the labral attachment to the bone) with a posterior labral extension. Treatment is reattachment of the labrum (SLAP repair). This is done arthroscopically (keyhole) using suture anchors.
Hope my answer is helpful.
