Question: Hi doctor. I've been disentfecting my 6 month old son's toys with Lysol disinfectant spray for a few months. After I spray them I let them air dry. He often puts these in his mouth. I didn't think about this till today, but may I be putting his health risk. I'm really concerned.

Hello and welcome,

The amount that your son has probably ingested would likely be relatively small and not harmful. But I wouldn't continue with this practice.

The alcohol in the Lysol probably dissipates but there are likely to be additional antiseptic residues that remain.

The best way to prevent infection is to wash your baby's hands after he has been out anywhere, such as if you take him with to the grocery or anywhere else. Wash your hands too. Do this first thing when you get back home. By doing this, you will be greatly limiting the germs that are brought into your home. If you get a cold, wash your hands after wiping your nose, before touching his things. If you bring a toy along on an outing and it is touched by other kids who may be sick, etc, then put that toy aside for a few days when you get home and the germs on it will die. Or just wipe it (if it is wipeable) with alcohol only.

Otherwise, there is really no need for his toys to be sanitized. It's ok for babies to put their toys in their mouths without them being sterile. I'm a mom so I've been through this.

I hope this information helps. Please let me know if I can provide further information.
