What Are The Disadvantages Of Bottle Feeding?

default
Posted on Wed, 4 Mar 2015
Question: We recently delivered twins and we are finding it very difficult to breast feed both of them, our doctor suggested to do a top-feed along with breast feeding. This Top-feed is being done using palaada (small feeding steel scoup), this is very difficult and we believe hurts the baby's gums.
We were also told by the doctor not to bottle feed but we are not sure why exactly?
I checked on the internet and the only disadvantages are preparation, cost, etc.

Could you tell me if there is any other specific reason why we cannot bottle feed instead of pallada?

Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Bottle feeding may lead to infections as well as nipple confusion

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

There are two reasons for your doctor insisting on avoiding bottle feeding.
* The first reason is to prevent infection. Even if you sterilize the bottles to your best, there is still a reasonable probability of infection to occur. Much of it can be avoided by spoon feeding or pallada feeding.
* The next important reason is called 'nipple confusion'. The shape of the mother's nipple and the nipple of the bottle are different. The two different shapes may confuse the baby. The bottle nipple is easier to latch on and hence there is more likelihood of the child preferring it. In case that happens, the child will no longer wish to feed from the mother's breast and breast feeding might get discontinued.

It is probably due to these reasons that your doctor insisted not to opt for bottle feeding.

Hope that helps.
