What Are The Chances Of Congenital Birth Defects After Drinking Alcohol During Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Wed, 13 Apr 2016
Question: What is the chance of birth defects from getting drunk in a spa at 104 degrees for about an hour (at 5 weeks pregnant)? I'm now 7 weeks and we are unhappily considering terminating the pregnancy because at at our age (both 38), and I'm Jewish, we have enough risk factors for birth defects. Have we raised our chances of having a baby with birth defects? Children and parents of children with development disabilities go through a lot that we would like to avoid.

Please give us an answer in some form that will help us make a decision. Thank you!

Brief Answer:
You can continue pregnancy.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear,
Thanks for trusting us about your health care.
I have gone through your history and understand your concerns.
Yes,it is true that chances of congenital birth defects increases as age advances and more common if family history is there.
But it is not an indication for termination of pregnancy unless it is proved in ultrasound.
There are so many methods which may detect congenital abnormalities before birth,so you can continue your pregnancy under expert supervision with time to time investigations.
Hope found useful, feel free to discuss more information.
Good luck.

Hello Doctor!

I was asking what increase there is in the chance of birth defects due to the time in the in the hot tub?

What is the chance of birth defects from getting drunk in a spa at 104 degrees for about an hour (at 5 weeks pregnant)? Have we raised our chances of having a baby with birth defects?

We've already decided to have a baby despite our age, etc. I'm trying to find out how much we've increased the chance of birth defects due to being drunk in a 104 F hot tub for an hour at the (according to the Internet) critical time of being 5 to 6 weeks pregnant.

We're trying to decide whether to terminate this pregnancy and try again, or continue with this one. Being a child with a severe issue, such as having only one hand or heart valve problems is extremely difficult for a child. Having a child with a learning disability, such as Down's syndrome, can be incredibly difficult for the parents. We're trying to minimize the chance of issues like these so we're trying to decide what to do here. If we've greatly increased our child's chances of having congenital defects or future health problems then we might decide to try a second time instead.

Please go back through our information carefully and let us know.

Thank you!

Brief Answer:
Yes,it may cause birth defects.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear,
Sorry for such a long delay in my response.
If you were in high temperature for more than 100 and for more than 10-15 min.,it may cause birth defects because of hyperthermia and it affect cell division of baby.
As such no documention is there and at 7 weeks we can not rule out congenital abnormalities, for which you have to wait till her second level ultrasonography and marker testing for down and other syndrome.
As such alcohol intake may not increased the chances of congenital abnormalities.
But as you were exposed to high temperature for one hour chances of birth defects are there,so you have to decide on this ground what you want to do.
Either want to continue as a high risk pregnancy or want to terminate it now.
Hope found useful.
Good luck.
Regards
