Brief Answer:
Apply expressed breast milk. Do not use soother or pacifier

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on Health care magic.

Breast milk is the best possible feed for a baby and I would strongly recommend not to compromise with it. Sometime cracked nipple or soreness of nipple may develop. Application of expressed breast milk provides relief. Nipple shield (made of silicone) may be used. Any brand is fine but Pigeon is a reputed brand and may be used. I would not suggest pacifiers as the act as a potential source of infection and need to be avoided.

Hope that helps.

Thank You doctor for your response.

We are not compromising on the breast milk. We are constantly feeding her breast milk. Actually my daughter who is (10 days old now) constantly needs something in her mouth and now my wife is complaining about the pain. Hence I thought of asking if we can use a soother for some time. And if yes, which brand do you recommend.

Thanks

Thanks for writing back. Sorry for not being able to respond earlier.

It is good to know that you are not compromising on breast milk. However, I do not think that putting something constantly in the mouth is a good idea. Breast feed strictly for not more than 20 mins on one breast and repeat it on the other breast only after one and a half to two hours, alternating the breasts each time. That way dry sucking can be avoided. The child normally sucks to indicate that it is hungry. You need to be able to interpret the signals correctly. I hope you would soon understand what the baby wants. The baby could actually be craving for a personal touch or attention and that can solve the problem. Be sure to talk and interact with your baby.

Regards
