Suggest Treatment For Mild Swelling At The Top Of The Shin Bone

default
Posted on Tue, 19 Mar 2019
Question: I have a swell on top of my shin bone. I don't feel any pain my muscles or in the leg except if I press on the swollen area. It seems local and the area is around 3-4 centimeters long, it follows the shin bone. The area is around mid way on the shin bone. When I search for shin splints online I can't really see the symptoms I have. I feel worse and more swollen if I stand or sit with the legs down during the day and the swelling is better after a nights sleep, it's not gone, but it's less than in the evening. I have been at the doctor, she says she thinks it's a shin splint and told me to take ibuprofen for a week. Though I'm on day 4 and I don't think much has changed. I have a birthmark covering the area and I think it's called a nevus flammeus, I was wondering if it could cause this? I have attached a picture of the area and size and a picture of another of my nevus flammeus on my arm, since the one on my leg can't be seen in day light.

Brief Answer:
Seems to be a shin splint.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

I have seen the attached images. The mild swelling on the top of the shin that you have is likely to be due to shin splints. This is a minor swelling and is not worrisome. Proper rest is also necessary to reduce the inflammation. In addition to ibuprofen you can do a hot compress, have rest and use an elastic bandage around it for extra support. This is not likely to be related to nevus flammeus.

I hope this answers your query.

In case you have additional questions or doubts, you can forward them to me, and I shall be glad to help you out.

Wishing you good health.

Regards.

Brief Answer:
Elastic brace will help.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Using an elastic brace will help in reducing the swelling and will provide support to the area. You can also keep an extra pillow under the leg while resting.

Hope my answer is helpful.
