Suggest Treatment For Knee Effusion After Injury
Question: I injured my knee in a fall. Had a huge knee effusion. Went to the ER and it has been wrapped ever since. This happened 2 weeks ago and I still have swelling, discoloration and heat radiating from knee. How long does it take to go away? Do I need to go back to the doctor.

A history of trauma, swelling, discoloration and head radiating from the knee suggests effusion into the joint, probably a hematoma formation and onset of infection.
Discoloration is commonly seen in hematoma formation i.e. due to collection of blood in the joint.
Heat radiation may be due to inflammation which may be associated with infection.
Hematoma takes 7-10 days to resolve.
However, I suggest you to see your orthopedician to look for signs of infection.
The fluid in the joint may have to be aspirated to look for evidence of infection and and hence plan further management.
