Suggest Treatment For Headache And Nausea In An Elderly Person

Question: I'm a 56 year old male, play tennis five times per week, although the Christmas break and a two week holiday has significantly curtailed that routine, and have blood pressure reading of 144/101 and bp of 88. I've recently returned to Canada from two weeks in Mexico and I am going through some sort of physical adjustments as I have not been feeling great. Headaches, sinus pressure and mild nausea. This seems to be a common situation after these trips. Prior to these most recent readings I was able to keep my bp in the 130//88 range.

Suggestions? Am I needing drugs or should I go back to my heavy physical workout program and cut back on certain foods?

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

I would like to explain that your actual blood pressure values (144/101) can be considered borderline.

Nevertheless, we can not come into conclusions with only some isolated blood pressure values. I would recommend you to closely monitor your blood pressure frequently during the day in the next 7-10 consequent days (in sitting position after 10 minutes of total relax) and then refer those values to your attending physician.

In such clinical situation, I would not advise starting any therapy.

I would only advise some modifications in your lifestyle:
- return back to your daily physical activity
- reduce salt and caffeine intake and avoid spicy, sugar and fatty food
- reduce weight, if you have gained any weight.

Regarding your headaches, sinus pressure and nausea, they may be related to the raise in blood pressure but also to climate changes (temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, etc.) between Canada and Mexico which induce a new equilibrium in your body.

Hope to have been helpful!

Wishing all the best for the new year,

Dr. Iliri
