Question: hello doctor, recently almost two month earlier i have had sex with sex worker, though i used condom still i want to get tested for hiv so please tell me how and where should i go in kolkata for a hiv test? please help

Brief Answer: ELISA is the first line test. Detailed Answer: Hello, Thanks for posting your query on HealthCareMagic. The HIV infections can be tested by a first line test called ELISA test. If the test turns out to be reactive, then the second line test called western blot test needs to be done. Both these tests are done on blood sample. The ELISA test is done free at ICTC centres and these centres are attached to all government hospitals. You can even the test for HIV at any accredited laboratory, however, in that case it will not be free. In case the ELISA turns out to be negative, you can get the test repeated after a period of 3 months. The transmission of HIV virus is through sexual route, infected blood products and vertical transmission from mother to child.
