Should I Wear Support Stockings For Swelling On My Right Shin Bone?

Posted on Tue, 23 Jan 2024
Question: Hi I have a swelling on my right shin bone. I've spoken with some colleagues of you in here, but I am awaiting results from xray. Meanwhile I have some questions with my symptoms. My shin started having a swell 3 months ago and since then it's going back and forth. In the evening I mostly feel sore in the shin and feel some small muscle trembling or something like that. Also the area get very warm to the touch in the evening and usually after a nights sleep the area is significantly less swollen in the.morning and much less. Warm. I feel Sore when putting pressure on the swollen area, but it's soft to touch feels like liquid and can be pushed around slightly. I feel most irritated when I have to hold my balance and when liften my foot up. I feel like sitting in my office chair makes it worse how can that be? The best thing seems to be laying down with my leg, but if I just use the leg one day then I'm back to the Strat. How can I cure this issue and what could be causing this in the first place? Should I wear support stockings and what else can I do? Would it help to stay in bed until its all gone or would it just come back as soon as I get up again?

Brief Answer:
Support stocking will help.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
Since you have a pain and swelling in the area on bearing weight on the leg this can be related to an inflammation or a mild hairline stress fracture. Keeping the leg hanging down can cause a fluid accumulation and pain. It is better to keep your feet on a foot rest while sitting for a long time on a chair.
Wearing a support stocking will be helpful. Best is to avoid the painful activities. Since it is there for 3 months this can take some time to heal. Maximum rest will help.
I hope this answers your query.

Thanks for your answer Dr. XXXXXXX Tayal.

Is there something I can do that will help to heal the fracture or some supplements that'd help?

Also, should I exercise the leg or try not to use it till the swelling is gone?

Is it normal for a fracture to be inflamed for 3 months non-stop?

When I first noticed the swelling and pain in the area, then I pushed through using my leg a lot for the whole first month until it hurt so much I had to stay home.

Brief Answer:
Details below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing in again.

To help with the healing, you can start with a calcium and vitamin D3 supplement regularly. The dose can be increased after getting the blood levels checked.

You can do mild passive exercises to increase the tone of muscles. The strenuous exercises need to be avoided.

The fracture - if it does not heal- can cause a persistent swelling and pain that can continue for many months.

Rest is necessary for proper healing.

Hope my answer is helpful.
