Over The Last Month Or So, I Have Noticed A

default
Posted on Mon, 4 Nov 2019
Question: Over the last month or so, I have noticed a persistent nagging headache, and also a head rush when I stand up. I haven’t lost balance or anything, but feels like a hard pulsing in my head as I stand up. A few months ago I had an unrelated neurological exam which he said was good, and I also had a basic eye exam and they said I shouldn’t need glasses or anything. Do you think this is symptomatic of a major illness such as a brain tumor or anything like that? Is this something I should be worried about? I just don’t know why it hasn’t subsided by now

Brief Answer:
Symptoms are not suggestive of brain tumor.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I am Dr Sudhir Kumar, Neurologist, and would try my best to help you.

I have noted your symptoms as well as the fact that your neurological and eye examinations were within normal limits. Therefore, your symptoms are not suggestive of brain tumor. Headaches are most likely to be tension headaches. Head rush on standing is a normal phenomenon to compensate for BP and pulse rate changes that occur on standing.

I sincerely hope my reply has helped you.

I would be pleased to answer, if you have any follow up queries or if you require any further information.

Thank you. But could it be possible that this came on after both my eye and neurological exam therefore wouldn’t have shown up on either? It just concerns me that it has lasted as long as it has, as I usually am not prone to such headaches. I do have relatively low blood pressure and high iron, as I have to have phlebotomy once a year because of it (last had it in August)

Brief Answer:
Very unlikely.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back.

It is unlikely that brain tumor has come on so suddenly without any other symptoms. Patients with tumor have additional symptoms such as double vision, vomiting, seizures (fits), weakness or arm or leg, etc.

If in doubt, an eye examination and neurological examination can be repeated.

Best wishes,

Dr Sudhir Kumar MD DM (Neurology)
