Brief Answer:
It was periapical abscess extending to form a gingival abscess

Detailed Answer:
Hi Richadmsintosh2013,
Thanks for the query. I have read it and understand your concern.

I think your broken tooth was infected, as the root was involved to form apical abscess..the infection could travel through gums in the buccal cavity to form abscess over there. The severe pain you had was due to this abscess.

As you tried to rub your head, the abscess was pressed nad burst making some noise and abscess feeling soft and moist (squishy). Once such abscess was drained, there was a bad taste in the mouth due to pus discharge with decayed/necrotic tissue in the abscess... The pus comes out and the pain stopped.

You should do gargles with warm salt-water, it'll help remove the bad taste.

Though the pain is gone the broken, damaged tooth needs treatment...With antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs & extraction of the broken, damaged tooth.

Please consult a Dentist.
I hope that answers your query. Any follow up query is welcome.
Thanks
