Could The Brace Worn On The Leg Be Contributing To Cellulitis?

default
Posted on Fri, 2 Dec 2022
Question: My sister is in her mid-seventies. The onset of MS began in her 20's. She still walks with Canadian Crutches and wears a brace on her left leg. Today I learned that she is experiencing another bout with cellulitis. Could the brace be contributing to the cellulitis?

This is not a question but additional information. When Sis has had a rough exacerbation, the doctors often prescribe a regimen of Prednisone.
I think that steroids have also compromised her immune system.

Brief Answer:
The brace contributes to cellulitis and steroids weaken the immune system.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Yes, braces can contribute to cellulitis. They may cause a damage in the skin which then gets infected and compromises the natural barrier of the skin and causes cellulitis. In people with low immune system it is more possible to happen, because the body is not able to fight much to protect itself from letting these inflammations develop.

So both your observations are true.

But what I want to say is that in your sisters case, maybe wearing the brace and using the steroids it is more beneficial that the risks and side effects that they cause. The doctors who have recommended them must have thoughts these risks and benefits, for her to be able to live the best quality life as it is possible with MS.

Hope this is helpful and answers your question. I’m Let me know if you need more clarifications.
