Brief Answer:
Playing outdoor games is the key with diet restriction.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Dear XXXXXXX

Welcome back to Ask a Doctor service.

Thank you very much for asking a direct query to me.

Yes, I agree with you that your son is considerably overweight and he does need to work harder towards reducing his weight.

His current body mass index is 32, and it needs to come down to less than 25. Ideal BMI is midway between 18.5 and 25, so around 22.

If we consider 22 as the target BMI for your son, his weight must come down to 61 Kgs.

So, that requires a loss of 30 kilograms.

However, one should not lose weight suddenly, extreme weight loss over a short period of time will pose serious health concerns, so a realistic target is about 10 kilos in 1 year.

This means, measuring the calorie intake of every meal and restricting the calorie intake to slightly less than his daily requirement and add more physical activity to his daily routine.

Just skipping will not at all be useful.

The best way to reduce weight and healthily is by playing an outdoor game like basketball or football regularly (daily) and restrict the total calorie intake to below 1800 Kilo calories per day.

Swimming for half an hour to one hour daily is also equally good.

If he so wishes, he can add jogging or running at least 3 days per week.

You can get a complete diet chart prepared based on my general guidelines by a dietitian (You must inform the dietitian the target is 10 kilogram weight loss over one year, and the total daily calorie intake to not exceed 1800 Kilo calories).

I hope this information will be useful for you, I apologise for the delay in answering your query, I was off duty as it was weekend.

Please do not hesitate to write back to me if you have any doubts and please do update me about your husband's health now, did my suggestion help him?.

I wish your son all the very best, and I wish you and your husband continued good health.

Warm regards.

Dear Doctor,
As you said i will definately ask if to start with a physical activity.
1.as far as my son's diet is concern
he eats 6 chapatis in a whole day for 2 meals lunch and dinner.
he does not eat rice at all.
around 75/100 g vegetable in the morning, and about same quantity salad in the evening.
He consumes a glass of milk in the morning.
In the breakfast he takes a dish of poha/ upma/4-6 medium sized idlis with chutney/ omlet bread (one of them per day)
Half a glass buttermilk in the night.
Is this meal too much for gaining the weight?
Can you right now suggest some remedies regarding diet immediately before i go to dietition?

Brief Answer:
Reduce 2 idlis and stop bread.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX

Thank you for writing back.

Your son needs to cut down 2 chapatis, 2 idlis or avoid idlis completely, and he needs to stop the bread completely.

Rest of the diet can continue.

Avoid potatoes in vegetables.

Decrease milk to half cup.

Increase green leafy vegetable quantity to 1/2 of everything he consumes.

The meal should be filling, but should be low in carbohydrates.

He needs to drink more water and also should start exercise as advised earlier.

I hope that answers your query.

Best wishes to your family.
