I've Been Sick For 2 Weeks Now, And I Haven't

default
Posted on Tue, 7 May 2019
Question: I've been sick for 2 weeks now, and I haven't been sick in years. Today my sore throat is back with a vengeance, which is the focus of today's question. Is it reasonable to have a sore throat on and off for almost 2 weeks, despite being on antibiotics (prescribed for a simultaneous ear infection)? My doctor switched me from amoxicyllin to Roxithromycin 3 days ago because the amoxicyllin wasn't getting results. This one appears to be getting the job done on the ear, but my sore throat is back and worse than ever. Yes, I gave a speech 2 days ago, which didn't help. Anyway, I'm tired of being sick. My question: Is this normal? Is this 'cause I'm getting older (turn 48 this year)? I've never been sick for 2 weeks with multiple symptoms (eye infection- gone, ear infection- still with me, sore throat- gone and now returned as bad as before.) Not sure I've heard of friends being sick for 2 weeks either. As an addendum, what else can I do to get healthy? No talking? More bedrest? Ideas?

Brief Answer:
Continue treatment for 7 days.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to Ask a doctor service.
I read your query and here is my advice.

I don't think this situation is age related (48 years is young to have good health). It is related to the severity of the infection that you are facing. You should continue the roxythromycine for 7 days without stopping it because stopping it makes it resistant. You can help yourself using spry throat and also using antinflamatory drugs such advil for inflammation.
Try to eat soups and liquids that can be swallowed easily to keep yourself hydrated and energetic.
If after the full treatment the infection is persistent or worsened you may probably need to use Ceftriaxon injections.

Hope I have answered the question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
