I've Been Having A Strange Facial Reaction Which May Or

Question: I've been having a strange facial reaction which may or may not be allergies.

For about two weeks, what started as general eye sensitivity has turned into frequent full facial spasms that happen sometimes up to 30-40 times per day. What normally happens is that I can feel an "attack" coming on about 10 second in advance, and then this build-up of pressure and heat in my face where my face starts rhythmically spasming, and my eyes cry lots and my nose runs. This will last for about 2 minutes and I just have to sit it out. It's very intense and my face feels almost numb. These attacks often come in waves, where I will have maybe 3 or 4 of them in 15 minutes and then none for hours. It does not seem to be related to whether I'm indoors or outdoors, and antihistamines/eye drops/nasal sprays have done nothing for me so I'm not sure if this is really an allergy. Any clues to what this might be? It has been quite debilitating for me because these attacks will happen when I am in public too, and I am embarrassed by the crying. As well, my eyes are extremely sensitive and I often have to wear sunglasses even when indoors. I asked my doctor over the phone and they really weren't sure, and said it may be allergies but seemed very strange.

Brief Answer:
Need to exclude focal seizures.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I am Dr Sudhir Kumar, Neurologist, and would try my best to help you.

I have noted your clinical details. Based on that, we need to exclude focal seizures. These generally occur due to a problem in the brain. A brain scan and EEG (electroencephalogram) would help in correctly identifying the problem.

Other possibility is hemifacial spasm, which are abnormal involuntary movements on one side of face, in some cases, both sides can be affected.

Treatment can be decided after the investigations.

I sincerely hope my reply has helped you.

I would be pleased to answer, if you have any follow up queries or if you require any further information.
