Question: I've been dealing with a rinithis problem for the last two years but o still don't know if it's allergies or not. My face as really changed because of this, I have deep dark circles and malar bags, I look old and tired but I'm only 25 and it makes me really depressed. Will my face go back to normal if I manage to control my current condition?

Brief Answer:
Yes, definitely treatable.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. Allergic rhinitis is very common. Urban populations have a prevalence of 1 in 7 people.

2. The dark circles due to allergies are very common and are also known as 'allergic shiners'. The dark color may be due to nasal and sinus congestion, with the dilated blood vessels visible through the thin delicate skin under the eye.

3. There are many other causes of dark circles and malar bags. Sleep deprivation, thyroid disorders, hormonal imbalance, anemia and so on.

4. Allergy tests are required for determining specific allergies. In addition, a general checkup from a local MD and other tests including for thyroid function, hormone levels, and anemia should be done along with the allergy tests and a Skin Specialist's opinion should be taken.

5. The control of allergies will help decrease dark circles. Keep yourself well hydrated. The malar bags may require further treatment such as local creams, IPL (Intermittent Pulsed Laser) laser treatment or facial plastic surgery, depending upon the severity.

6. For immediate relief, anti-allergy medication, nasal steroid sprays, mucolytics, and steam inhalation will help.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
