Brief Answer:
Usually normal to have slight ankle edema at the end of the day

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,

It is usually normal to have slight ankle edema at the end of the day if you have been standing or sitting for long periods of time. This is more likely happen with overweight people (but can happen with any weight) and should disappear after you lie down. Wearing tight shoes or stockings may also cause swollen ankles by compressing your legs.

Bilateral ankle swelling may also be caused after breast cancer surgery or radiation therapy. If you have discomfort, heavy feeling in the legs or skin in the area become shiny, red, thickened you should contact your doctor for the medical checkup and treatment.

In order to avoid ankle swelling try to avoid wearing tight stocking/shoes or standing or sitting for long periods of time. Also, try to lose weight if you are overweight. Be physically more active.

Just want to inform you that certain disorders such as heart problems, kidney problems, underactive thyroid, leg vein problems, certain medications and malnutrition may also cause leg swelling.

Hope, this information is helpful for you. Please, feel free to ask me if there is anything else you need to know.

Sincerely
