Is Single Loop Of Cord Around The Fetal Neck A Cause For Concern?

default
Posted on Tue, 27 Jun 2017
Question: Hi,

I am 39 weeks 4 days pregnant. My due date is XXXXXXX 8th.

I got USG scan done at week 37 in which everything was fine. Specifically no cord around baby's neck was detected in that scan.

Since I have not delivered yet, my gynae asked me to get another scan done to check foetal well being. In today's scan, single loop cord was detected around baby's neck. I wish to know if this is possible within 2 weeks.

Also, does this mean that a c-sec will be needed?

Please advise.

Regards, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
A single loop of cord around the neck is not an indication for C-section.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

Thank you for posting your query.

Babies keep moving around and they can get the cord around their neck any time, and a single loop of cord around the neck is not a clear indication for C-section and usually resolve before delivery.

The cord loops around the neck when the baby passes through a loop of the cord, so it does not take more than a few seconds for it to happen, 2 weeks is more than sufficient.

Hope this answers your query.

Wishing you safe delivery.

Regards
