Is Lack Of Sound From A Newborn Until One Year Normal?

default
Posted on Fri, 13 Mar 2015
Question: Dear Doctor, i want to ask a question about language and voice apparatus in humans. I understand the vocal tissue is formed even before born. Thereafter we make sounds from moment of birth ie crying then cooing etc...

Is it possible, in a normal totally healthy baby to never make a single sound before 1st birthday (either crying, cooing babbling etc) ??

Brief Answer:
Very unlikely for a normal baby not to make any sound by age of 1 year

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I would not consider that to be normal. In case that really happens, I would consider getting a hearing test done first. Otoacoustic emissions test or BERA are tests that can be done at this age where the child remains passive during the procedure. Further steps would ensure only after the results of the hearing test.

Hope that helps.
