Is It Safe To Travel By Flight Post Distal Radius Fracture Surgery?

default
Posted on Fri, 3 Jul 2015
Question: I had surgery for a distal radius fracture on 6/5/15 with internal fixation. I had hoped to fly on 6/22 on a 2-1/2 hr flight. One orthopod(hip and knee) advised not to fly for 6 weeks due to DVT risk. I see the hand surgeon from the same practice on 6/16 and will ask her as well. What is your advice? Thanks!

Brief Answer:
DVT is less liekly if you take stretch breaks.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
After two weeks of surgery the risk of DVT is minimal. Also the flight is only for two and a half hours. You can be careful to stretch your legs every half an hour during the flight to avoid the risk of DVT.
Do consult your hand surgeon regarding this to rule out all the major risk factors for DVT in your case.
I hope this answers your query.
In case you have additional questions or doubts, you can forward them to me, and I shall be glad to help you out.
Wishing you good health.
