Thanks for asking on HealthCareMagic.

Congratulations on having a baby. Let me assure you that breast milk is the best feed for a baby and there can be no alternatives for the same. A child of this age thrives best on breast milk and no other supplemental feeds. Feeding once every 2 hours or on the demand of the baby is reasonable. The baby is to be fed on one breast at a time for a total duration of not more than 20 mins and the breast should be alternated with each feed. Exclusive breast feed is to be given for 6 months.

However, since the vitamin D reserves are low in many mothers and thereby in the newborn as well, it is preferable to go for Vitamin D supplementation. Arbivit-3 Drops 1 ml once a day can be given for this purpose. Other micronutrients can also be supplemented. A to Z Drops 6 drops once a day from 21 days of age can be given.

Please note that these are for the overall well being of the baby and not for weight gain. The weight of the baby normally comes down initially before it starts gradually rising after the first two weeks of life. So, there is nothing to worry about at this point of time. If the feeds are adequate, weight gain will automatically follow. The adequacy of feeds would be indicated by the number of times urine is passed. Passing urine at least 5-6 times over 24 hours would be reasonable.
