Is Atropine Advisable For Treating A Corneal Abrasion?

Posted on Fri, 3 Feb 2017
Question: Sir my son underwent a corneal foreign body removal 3 weeks back. He is 2 years old. The metal foreign body was not in the vision axis. It was located 5'o clock. Doctor said the rust ring was deep embedded, he could remove only 85% of it. The residue will clear on its own. After 3 weeks the cornea is not healed properly. Again doctor said it will take time and the crater will go off. For the past 3 weeks he was administered with TOBA and Lubitop. Please suggest should I consult another doctor. I live in XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Consult another doctor for need of atropine in such case

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Your doctor was in fact doing correct. If the metal foreign body was deep seated it cannot be removed and if probed will lead to corneal ulcer and puncture. There would be staining on the cornea for few weeks and it takes time to clear.

If I were the treating doctor I would prescribe 1% atropine eye ointment . I would also ensure eye patching to avoid sun exposure.

I suggest to take consult with same or another Pediatric Ophthalmologist to confirm my opinion.

Brief Answer:
Physical details are better

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

If the cornea has not healed at all in three weeks it better to give these acuvail S and Genteal. THe latter is actually artificial tears which moisturizes and helps heal.

Every person responds differently when it comes to healing esp children.
I understand your confusion now but physical details are more clearer when you examine. You should have asked the average time to heal completely? After what time you should start worrying about non healing to each doctors who actually seen it.
