I Need An MRI Of My Abdomen Area For Elevated

Posted on Sat, 7 Nov 2020
Question: I need an MRI of my abdomen area for elevated liver enzymes and evidence of fatty liver infiltration on a sonogram.

Is there a big difference between the machine models: Tesla 1.2, 1.5 and 3?

My doctor wants me to use the Tesla 3 because he says it will give the best images. I explained to the radiology office that I am extremely claustrophobic and they told me that there is little difference in image quality among the 3 machines and all produce excellent images. Would you agree with this statement?

Also, how much does contrast really enhance the images?

Brief Answer:
Contrast images are more informative than non contrast scan images

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing in to us.

Hope you are not in much discomfort.

Your CT report is showing an enlarged right lobe of liver and fatty changes.

In context of the MRI machine ability, a 3.0T MRI has twice the magnetic field strength of a 1.5T MRI and so the signal strength is twice and the scan time is faster and will help in clarity of images due to high signal to noise ratio. In simple terms, for abdomen MRI a 3.0T MRI is always best when compared to a 1.2T MRI and 1.5T MRI.

So in reply to the answer given by the radiology office, all 3 machines can pick most abnormal features but the 3.0T MRI is surely the best due to the physics involving the magnetic field strength and image acquisition will be reasonably free from artefacts.

The words little difference is highly subjective and can depend on many factors like the condition in the patient and any abnormal area suspected. Keeping in mind enlarged liver and fatty changes, I find all the MRI machines adequate to show any abnormal areas.

However you may discuss the matter with the radiologist and get a scan done on an open magnet MRI machine to counter your claustrophobia.

Contrast MRI is surely an advantage over a non contrast scan. The contrast enhancement varies with the nature of the tissue and this can prove to be beneficial in many cases. If the blood supply to an abnormal area is good then enhancement is higher than the surrounding area and helps to provide an excellent depiction of the lesion area.

Regards,
