Question: I have put my mom on a magnesium suppliment called CogniMag. It states that it is Magesium Threonate Magnesium (from 1,000 mg Magtein magnesium threonate). Then it says amount per serving is 72 mg. How many mg is it actually? I have read that 320 mg is the normal daily amount, but one doctor stated 750 mg because she has alzheimers. I need to get her on at at least 320, but I thought this was 1,000 mg. I am so confused. Please help.

Brief Answer:
Your mother should take 2 capsules, 2 times per day

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,

Yes, recommended dietary allowance for your mother is 320 mg/day. It is the amount of magnesium per day necessary for the maintenance of good health. We usually take that amount with everyday food.

CogniMag two capsules (one serving) contain 1000 mg of Magnesium-L-threonate, pure magnesium in the compound is 72 mg. As the manufacturer recommends 2 capsules, twice daily, which will be 2 g of magnesium L-threonate capsules containing 144 mg magnesium a day.
In Alzheimer’s disease not Magnesium but Magnesium L-threonate (a compound of the magnesium) was found to be effective for cognitive decline and impairment. Therefore your mother should take 2 capsules, 2 times per day as recommended by the manufacturer.

Regarding recommended dietary allowance, consider the fact that your mother is also taking magnesium with everyday food. Therefore, daily amount of her magnesium may exceed 320 mg/day (magnesium from food and the supplement).

Hope the information is helpful for you. Please, let me know if I can assist you further.
Thank you
