I Have Had Tonsil Stones All My Life. They Come

default
Posted on Tue, 23 Nov 2021
Question: I have had tonsil stones all my life. They come and go, and are usually not a big deal. However recently, I have developed a mucous feeling in my throat that I try to cough up. This could be due to my seasonal allergies. Yesterday I was trying to see if something was visible in the back of my throat. I noticed a tonsil stone which I removed with a qtip. When doing this I think I damaged a part of my tonsil as a piece of my tonsil looks a bit swollen or detached and I can feel it touch the back of my mouth when I swallow. I would be glad about any tips on how to relieve the sensation or if it is something serious. Also if it is going to subside on it’s own or if it has to be removed.

Brief Answer:
Tonsil inflammation due to tonsil stones.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The symptoms seem to be related to tonsil stones.
Tonsil stones can cause inflammation of the tonsils.
I suggest using an antibacterial spray for local application in the tonsil area.
I also suggest to gargle with salty water and drink a lot of liquids.
In case of throat pain, you can use anti inflammatory medications such as Acetaminophen.
Usually it substitutes on it's own, so you should not be worried.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Kind regards!

Thank you for your answer! I have health anxiety and the internet described one-sided tonsil pain as tonsil cancer in many cases so I got very worried, as I was experiencing the mucous in my throat and pain before this incident, but I only saw it swell since yesterday. It looks a bit weird as only a small part towards the top of the tonsil is swollen, and is very irritating when swallowing.
Do you happen to know what kind of antibacterial spray I should ask the pharmacist for?
Thank you for your help!

Hi,
the swelling has not gone down yet. Could it be that a tonsil stone is stuck where I cannot see it? How can I remove a tonsil stone behind the tonsil? Should I get this checked out by an ENT specialist? It is quite annoying when trying to swallow...
