I Have Been Having Strange Sensations At The Base Of

Question: I have been having strange sensations at the base of my buttocks (where you sit) for two years. There is no numbness, pins and needles or pain, though. It feels like something is pressing in on that spot whether I’m sitting on it or lying on my side. Though I’ve had very low back and hip pain and it varies depending on inactivity or activity, these sensations keep going whether I’m very active and on my feet or sitting around all day.

I have had extensive bloodwork done in a variety of areas and for various issues, and I’ve had regular colon cancer screenings, but nothing at all is showing up. No one seems to be able to recognize what this may be and, honestly, it can be really crazy-making and distressing because the sensation feels like someone is touching me, even when it’s clear there is no one there. It appears to be neurological and possibly related to a spinal issue? No one seems to know or have heard of this. Any ideas?

Brief Answer:
MRI scan help, if not done.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I am Dr Sudhir Kumar, Neurologist, and would try my best to help you.

I have noted your symptoms, and can understand the discomfort you are going through. More so, because the cause has not been identified yet.

I agree that the issue seems to be neurological. It is possible that a nerve is pinched in the area- either at lumbar (lower back) level or in gluteal (buttock) muscles.

You would benefit from MRI of lumbar spine and gluteal muscles. They should specifically look for compression of nerves due to prolapsed discs or within pyriformis muscles.

I sincerely hope my reply has helped you.

I would be pleased to answer, if you have any follow up queries or if you require any further information.

Thank you very much for your expertise. My general practitioner hasn’t been very helpful in figuring this out and it’s left me frustrated to hear repeatedly that “everything looks great!” Everything has not been great, whether she can figure it out or not.

Do you have any suggestions on, perhaps, what she needs to hear in order to refer me to a specialist? And, also, how I should explain these symptoms in a way both she and a specialist may better understand what they can be looking for from an MRI? I wish healthcare were easier to navigate here in the USA.

Thank you, again. XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
You could describe the features and severity of your symptoms better.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back.

You could tell them that the discomfort is severe. The quality and nature of discomfort can be described in detail, and how it affects your daily activities. You can also point out the areas exactly affected. You could suggest than an MRI perhaps can help in identifying the cause.

I agree the healthcare in the US is good for emergencies and critical care, however, for chronic cases, it does drag on and takes a long time.

Anyways wishing all the best in your case.
