I Frequently Find Myself Growing Dependent On Nasal Decongestant Sprays

default
Posted on Wed, 4 Dec 2019
Question: I frequently find myself growing dependent on nasal decongestant sprays (Afrin, Otrivine, etc.). I%E2%80%99ve gone through periods of my life where I%E2%80%99ve been dependent for nearly a year before weaning off.

Are there any techniques I can use to wean off faster, or avoid dependency altogether (apart from simply not using it for more than three days%E2%80%94congestion from a URI of course often lasts considerably longer).

Thank you!

Brief Answer:
Rhinitis Medicamentosa...

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for posting the query

After going through the description, I am of the opinion that you have developed a condition called Rhinitis medicamentosa. This happens due to prolonged use of the nasal decongestants, wherein, the nasal mucosa develops the rebound congestion compelling you to use the decongestant drops/spray frequently.

We usually manage similar cases with Steroid Nasal spray with or without saline nasal spray and a short course of oral steroids to get them out of this situation.

My suggestion to you is to consult an apt ENT specialist and get a thorough evaluation done to rule out allergic nasal conditions/nasal polyposis/chronic sinusitis. Also, you would require an X-ray of the Paranasal sinuses to confirm the same. With the above medications, the doctor can get you out of this habit as early as possible.

I hope this answers your query; revert back to me if you have any follow-up queries.
