Question: I am havinga Colonoscopy on Wednesday. I don%E2%80%99t like sedation, but I had one done without it 5 years agoand it was to painful so I don%E2%80%99t think I have achoice. My Doctor uses Propofol. Iam on Dilantin fora swizuredisorder. I have not hada seizure since I was 18. Is there anyone on the site who is an anethesieologist who has used Propofol on patients like me, and can reassur me that Propofol would still safe for me? I called Doctors office but Doctor was not in, and nurse could not answer my question.

Brief Answer:
No interactions between propofol and dilantin.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to Ask a doctor's service.
I read your query and here is my advice.

There is no interactions between propofol and dilantin. They can be used together safely.
The fact that you have been seizure free for so long is quite a good evidence and favourable for anesthesia.
So you can feel safe to use propofol and dilantin.

Hope I have answered the question.

I am nervous about sedation, but I have heard that Propofol is safe. Do you know if an epidural or a spinal block is ever used for Colonoscopy?

Brief Answer:
Better propofol than epidural.

Detailed Answer:
Epidural or spinal anesthesia can be used to do colonoscopy but is not preferable.
Doctors use propofol because it's effects end up quickly and it is really safe .
Epidural or spinal anesthesia for colonoscopy is reserved when propofol anesthesia fails or is contraindicated.

Brief Answer:
You will be monitored by anesthesiologist.

Detailed Answer:
I think it is safe with your circumstances.
I think the anesthesiologist will titrate the dosage gradually in order that it will not be too much and also keep you sedated.
Don't be afraid because you will be monitored.
