How Long Does It Take For Cystic Artery And Cystic Duct To Close Off After Hemostasis?

Question: I had gall bladder surgery 22 years ago and feel fine... just curious how long does it take for cystic artery and cystic duct to close off after Hemostasis and create scar tissue. I just want to make sure that enough time has gone by and I don’t need to worry about anything if my clips ever come off..

Brief Answer:
Healing with scar around 4-6 months is completed usually.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

* As per my surgical experience, there is varying time period of healing of cystic artery and cystic duct depending upon the type of stump, individual healing process and other factors; but generally it takes around 4-6 months for complete healing and scar tissue formation.

* Unless there were many complications involved during or after surgery, a very delayed problem with surgical clips as at period of 22 years is highly unlikely.

Wish you fine health. I would like to appreciate your further doubts in this regard.

What does I appreciate your further doubts mean?

I don’t understand?

Are you asking me if I have any further doubts?

I just wanted to make sure that after 22 years cystic artery and cystic duct have formed scar tissue then healed and cannot open up again..

I was a young man at the time of surgery and was in perfect health at the time so just wanted to be sure... thank you for your help!

Is there a need to cauterize the cystic duct and cystic artery after clips are left in permanently for them to close up , scar and seal permanently?

Or does the cystic duct and Cystic artery close up and scar after clips are installed without the need for cauterization?

I understand the clips are left in permanently... I just want to make sure that the duct and artery will heal correctly on it’s own without the need for cauterization once Hemostasis is achieved?

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

* Cauterization is only necessary for hemostasis purpose, it is not meant for scar or other healing process. On the reverse, sometimes over use of cauterization creates delay in healing process.

* In a nut shell, cystic duct and artery heal correctly on its own without need of cauterization once hemostasis is achieved perfectly.

Have a nice day.

So just to confirm once the cystic duct and cystic artery are healed, completely closed after 6 months and scar tissue has formed.

They will both remain closed and not open again regardless if any clips falling off. I just want to make sure they can’t open again.

Considering it’s been 22 years since the surgery I just wanted to confirm this.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

* Once there is complete healing with fibrosis and scarring, there is no role of clip in the body, whether it stays or falls off ; as the part remains closed for rest of the life.

Thanks.
