Question: I have fluid in my right ear. I have been on antihistamines and decongestants for a couple of weeks. I have had my ears washed, and nothing is helping. I hear loud sounds in my right ear when I swallow. the only thing that has dried out is my mouth and throat. I am a 68 year old woman, and I have never had this before. Help!?

Brief Answer:

Middle ear effusion?

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Your symptoms are suggesting a fluid pile up in the ear. I wonder if you are told fluid in the external ear or middle ear.

An ear has three parts external, middle and internal. If there is fluid in the middle since there is space there, should be drained out.

Of course, antihistamines n decongestants help but partially.
I suggest seeing a Specialist (Otologist) and not a primary physician.

They can examine if the fluid in the external or middle one. It can be drained with some procedure in the ear.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

The person I saw at the doctor's office said that he could see the fluid in my ear. Does that help?

Brief Answer:

Effusion in ear.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

External ear effusion gets better with decongestants n antihistamines for 3 weeks.

I think it could have extended to the auditory tube or middle ear. Please see an otologist.

A short course of steroid ear drops can be tried in such people. ask your doctor about it.

Hope I have answered your query.

Take care
