How Can Aggravating Pain And Inflammation In The Jaw And Lips Be Treated?

default
Posted on Wed, 27 Sep 2023
Question: My mother, 63, has been suffering from pain and inflammation in her jaws and lips. Please note that she oes not have any tooth present now. Tried for dentures but because of that pain she can not take the dentures.
This problem is there for almost 1.5 years now. And the problem is aggravating everyday. Now the problem is severe.
I have consulted here with three dentists. They have seen her but they are telling that they can not find any problem with the jaws and can not find any reason for that. Though they had provided with some creams/ointment to apply. The medications she has used so far (all suggested by them) are-
1) Lycored to take and Cloben-G to apply
2) Hexigel-Mucopain combination to apply
3) Zytee to apply
But unfortunately problem is being aggravated instead of cure!!
I am very upset with the treatment she is getting. Please suggest something such that she gets some relief from the pain!!

Brief Answer:
Can be due to dry mouth.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for the reply.

From the image it does not look like inflammation as there is no significant redness or rawness inside mouth..

So the symptoms that you are explaining can be due to a condition known as Burning mouth syndrome.

This is commonly seen in indviduals having a dry mouth.

You can get Biotene mouthwash and she can gargle with it few times a day.
She can suck ice and do cool water
rinses.
She can use oral lubricant like artificial saliva drops and gels like Oralgel.

Hope this helps..

Thank you for the answer.
1) May i know, what is the reason for dry mouth?
2) What i have found is that "oragel" is basically benzocaine!! so it is a kind of relief, not a treatment for cure. So how long she can go on using it? will not this create further problem in future?
Is not there any treatment for cure?

Brief Answer:
There can be many reasons.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Dry mouth is not a disease but a symptom of any underlying disease or side effect of medication..

As she is taking a number of medicines it can be due to it.

Cure depends on elimination the cause.

So once consult your Doctor and discuss about dry mouth so that he can evaluate and do necessary changes.

Also please read carefully.
I have not advised oragel it is ORAL-GEL that is not benzocaine but it is a mouth lubricant to reduce dryness in mouth..

Hope this helps.

Regards.

Thank u madam.

1)I would like to know, which doctor to consult for diagnosing the cause of "dry mouth" , i mean whether "Dentist" or "General Physician"?
2) If for the time being, she takes the measures you suggested, will she get relieved from the pain and inflammation problem?

Consult her treating Physician.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
You can consult her treating doctor so that her medicine doses can be
re- checked and if needed adjustments can be done to reduce severity of dry mouth.

Yes, she will get relieved but it takes time and consistent management is a must.
