Hi There, I Have A Query Regarding My Resting Heart

Question: Hi there,

I have a query regarding my resting heart rate. It's dropped recently according to my FitBit and I was wondering if this was down to increased physical activity or if I should be concerned. I work in a fairly sedentary office job, walking 6 miles a day and jogging quickly for 5 minutes every hour. I also do 40-48 minutes of interchanging cardio and resistance exercises Mon-Fri. Recently my resting heart rate has dropped from 66 to 55 and often when I'm laid in bed drops to 42-48. I appreciate the FitBit may not be entirely accurate! I haven't increased or decreased the amount of exercise I am undertaking and my diet has remained the same. Should I be concerned?

Many thanks

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome to Ask a Doctor service!

I understand your concern and would explain that it is quite normal in healthy persons who exercise regularly to have a lower heart rate.

This is because of regular physical exercise.

As long as you do not have any shortness of breath, lightheadedness, there is nothing to worry about.

Anyway, I would recommend performing a resting ECG, in order to examine your heart rhythm and exclude any conductance disorders.

Hope to have been helpful!

Wishing all the best,
