Hi My Daughter Is 18 And Had A Seizure We Are Weaning Off Levipil Slowly And Adding Tegretol, Do You Think There’s A Possibility Of A Breakthrough Seizure? Should We Continue With Levipil Or Change To Tegretol?
Question: Hi my daughter is 18 and had a seizure after a gap of 15years. We have been giving her levipil 500 twice a day and so far she’s doing well.
We decided to take a second opinion and the other doctor wants to change her medicine to tegretol CR 200. I have a few concerns regarding this,
Firstly since we will be weaning off levipil slowly and adding tegretol, do you think there’s a possibility of a breakthrough seizure?
Secondly, whatever I have read about tegretol seems to be more negative than levipil.
According to you, which is a better option ?
Should we continue with levipil or change to tegretol?

I have gone through your question and understand your concern.
The choice of antiepileptic drugs depends upon many factors like diagnosis and cause of seizures, MRI, EEG, patient age and sex, side effects profile.
Levetiracetam is a good drug with very few interaction or side effects. Tegrital is used a first line medication for partial or complex partial seizures. The benefit and harm of both medications can he discussed with treating doctor.
Any change in drug can lead to breakthrough seizures and is quite unpredictable.

Thank you doctor. My question remains the same, should we do the switch over or stick to levipil 500 only? Really wouldn’t want my daughter to have a breakthrough seizure plus she seems to be doing pretty well with levipil as in no seizures n no side effects. Please suggest .
