Question: Hi; My wife has been getting avastin injections in both eyes for the past 8 years every 8 weeks. recently she has experienced a major drop in pulse rate a day or 2 after the injections. A drop from 90's to 39-40 which lasts for a day or 2. Also recently she has passed out every once in a while. She has had mri's, cat scans, etc and no cause indicated. One mri has indicated that the veins in the back of her head appear restricted and cause tensions. She does take lysinipril, hydrochorthyizide and amilodipine for high blood pressure. She feels light headed and listless continually and feels like fainting. Is avastin a possible intereaction withother medication? She takes a statin for chorlestoral.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Sir

After going through the medical details provided by you of your wife I can understand your concern for her health and I would like to tell you that although avastin has a long list of side effects but per se it is not know to cause bradycardia leading to blackout.

The othe anti hypertensives which you have mentioned also doesn’t have any known significant interaction with it.

However it’s advisable that you should monitor her blood pressure regularly and if it’s staying around 100 systolic or below then the dose of anti hypertensives must be reduced to avoid symptoms of dizziness or fainting.

The monitor which has been placed for 2 weeks is a vital test and will give very important information about the cause of her symptoms that whether symptoms are due to some cardiac rhythm abnormality or not.

By the mean time just keep a watch on her blood pressure and wait for the monitoring report to come, and then get back to me with reports.

I hope this information will guide you properly.

Kind Regards
Dr Bhanu Partap
