Can Duphalac Be Given To Soften Stool In A Diabetic?
Question: Hi,
My Father-in -law aged 59years, is with Type-2 Diabetic taking glycomet medicines everyday and under control, since few days(4-5) there is bleeding bit while he pass motion, so is it internal piles or what medicines to provide to control this.
Do I have to give Duphalac(its with me now) solution as it sugar riched or is there any substitute for this to soften motion.his Blodd sugar level is under control after taking medicines, pls suggest and advise.

1st, it is very difficult to say that this is piles without examination.
Examination is a must before one can diagnose piles.
However. at the age of 59 years, if he has had similar problem previously, it is likely to be piles.
So yes, when possible, and if the bleeding is large volume and recurrent, it is better to meet a surgeon to get the diagnosis confirmed.
As for Duphulac, yes you can give it. Duphulac/Duphalac (depending on the brand purchased) has lactulose. This is not absorbed. It remains in the intestines. So you can give it as far as the sugars go.
It would be better to add (assuming that we are dealing with piles)-
1. a high fiber diet
2. plenty of fluids
3. isapghulla husk 3 tsf 2 - 3 times per day.
Sometimes, despite medical measures, bleeding persists and in such situation, meeting a surgeon is needed for surgical options for the same.
