Question: Hi, I run on treadmill and my legs (bones below knees) used to ache . Then I started having a cup of milk everyday. it actually helped and no more aching. but thing is milk can be fattening. Also the place I live in, I do not get many options to get skimmed milk or low fat milk . what to do ? what are best alternatives ?? (also low budget please) Thanks in advance.

Brief Answer:
normal toned milk isn't fattening when taken in moderation...

Detailed Answer:
Hello Jagadeesh,
Welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service...
I've gone through your query in details...

Please note that normal toned milk (single toned) milk, when taken in moderation, isn't considered fattening. Since you're taking a cup every day, you can safely continue it without a doubt (just don't mix sugar in it, use honey instead).

Along with it, for variety and better supplementation purpose, you can switch over to a bowl of seasonal fruit salads (eg. some chopped apples, small banana cubes, throw some boiled chickpeas, mildly crushed homemade cottage cheese like chhana, egg whites, cucumber slices, ripe tomatoes, peanuts, almonds, crushed coriander leaves, spice it up a bit with some chili flakes, oregano, lime juices)...

No need to add each and every one of them every day, just keep switching between one or two seasonal fruits, available veggies, legumes. All these are routinely available at a very reasonable budget as well...

Hope this answers your query.

Kind Regards

Thanks for answering my query XXXXXXX It was clear and perfectly suitable for me. I got couple more things to confirm . 1) I get toned milk packets from nearby supermarket. so I am gonna go with that. Is that ok ? 2) I work out at gym and I heard that drinking chocolate milk is helpful. I can buy some Hershey syrup, mix in milk and heat it up a bit before having it. is this recommended or its just a myth ? Thanks a lot again.

Brief Answer:
please see the detailed answer below...

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back,

Coming straight to your queries:

1) That's fine, as long as they're toned. Since you're buying from the supermarket, better to get those with tetra pack.

2) Not at all true, commercially available chocolate syrups are highly laden in sugar syrup and artificial sweeteners. Better to avoid them.

Since you've mentioned, let me enlighten one more fact regarding chocolate, if at all needed to be consumed, should be dark solids (nothing less than 70-75% of dark cocoa solids). Yes, they're highly proteinaceous but extremely hard to get without preservatives, extremely bitter too (making the sugar add-on even more).

Just stick to the basics.

Kind Regards
