Hi.. I Have Torn A Muscle Or Possible Tendon In

default
Posted on Fri, 3 May 2019
Question: Hi.. I have torn a muscle or possible tendon in my quadracept right leg. I slipped on a wet floor and my leg went out to catch me. I heard a pop and felt extreme pain for 10 min or so.. after that the pain is virtually non existent but extremely sore muscle. I now have an indent lower middle of thigh and slightly to the inside. I can walk slow without a limp but unable to walk fast really with out discomfort. Can move my leg any direction with cconsiderable power although to extend leg with any effort I realize could be dangerous . The muscle is balled up slightly above indent. Will this heal in its own or is surgery the only option for something like this? It’s been 2 day and it’s getting more comfortable but that indent is definitely there now. No bruising.. thanks for and answer in advance!

Brief Answer:
Can be torn muscle or fascia.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The description you have given is suggestive of a torn muscle or a fascia. The healing depends on the length of fascia that is torn. The indentation is less likely to improve but the pain and strength of muscle can regain with rest in 4-6 weeks. You need to get an MRI scan done to assess the exact damage that has happened. Most of the times a surgical repair is not needed in such cases.
I hope this answers your query.

Thank you for the quick reply. The indentation is quite large at about 5 cm in length and 3-4 cm in width. Otherwise I’m comfortable and can walk slowish with no issues. It is improving even over the last day.

I’m an avid down hill skier and we use the quads quite a bit for this.. will I have higher tendency to injure even after it is fully healed? If I get surgery even though it is not required will it be stronger?

I’m assuming this can be a day surgery at the right clinic. I just want to make an informed decision if there is a choice between surgery and no surgery.

I will get an an MRI done as you suggested.

Thanks for your helpful information!

Brief Answer:
Depends on the extent of damage.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
You have a large indentation and can be due to tendon rupture. Surgery is a better option in case it is more than a partial rupture. Chances of reinjury or delayed healing are present. Get an MRI scan and plan for surgery accordingly. A day care surgery is possible if it is a small tear.
Hope my answer is helpful.
