Question: Hi Doctor, I have a few queries related to HIV transmission. Since I have a fear of HIV. 1. Does HIV transmit through drinking Chilled Cold coffee or chilled milk shake( assume HIV positive blood is mixed on this chilled and cold coffee or milkshake) and I drink that immediately. Does cold temperature retain virus to alive? Any possible to transmit HIV in this way?? 2. While sitting on Western toilet for poop, my penis sometimes touch the surface of the toilet seat basin frequently ( assume some HIV positive person just used same Western toilet and his urine spread accross the toilet basin, and immediately I used and where my penis touched his urine on the toilet basin) Does this poses a HIV risk? Does HIV transmit in this way? Do I need to take HIV test based on the above 2 situations? Thanks in advance.

Brief Answer:
There is no risk of getting HIV through your exposures.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX

HIV virus can be transmitted only by coming into contact with specific bodily fluids of someone living with the virus like blood, semen, vaginal or anal fluid, breast milk etc. HIV can be transmitted during unprotected sex, through sharing injecting needles, from mother-to-baby during pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding and through contaminated blood transfusions but for transmission to occur, the HIV virus in these fluids must get into your bloodstream through a mucous membrane (found in the rectum, vagina, mouth or tip of the penis), open cuts or sores or by direct injection.

The exposures you have mentioned are non specific and do not meet the criteria for transmission of HIV virus. Further, there is not enough HIV virus in the bodily fluids like saliva, sweat or urine to transmit it from one person to another so you need not to worry about the transmission. There is no risk of getting HIV through the exposures mentioned above and I don't think there is any need for testing. Be relaxed, allay your fear or anxiety related to HIV and live your life normally. If you have any further query feel free to ask me again any time.

Thank You

Brief Answer:
The risk of HIV persists if the infectious fluid comes in contact with cut.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX

Welcome back and thanks for the follow-up.

There is no risk of transmission of HIV by drinking tea or coffee mixed with infectious fluid because as I mentioned the virus must get into your blood stream to transmit the infection. Further, if the tear from positive person touches your mouth or lips the risk persists only if there is any cut or sore in the mouth or lip and the infectious fluid comes in direct contact with it. Don't think too much about the virus because the exposure you have mentioned are non risky. Calm down, forget the episode and move on in life.

Thank You

Brief Answer:
Don't think too much and consider counselling services if needed.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX

You are not at risk of getting the infection so I will advice not to think too much unnecessarily about the virus or the disease. Forget the episode and get engaged with routine work to get rid of the incidence. If still you will not able to manage then will suggest to consider counselling services. For any further help from my side you can write to me any time and I am always available here to answer your queries.
