Hi - I Live In XXXXXXX TN And I Am

Question: Hi - I live in XXXXXXX TN and I am a new truck driver at a trucking company that uses team driving to transport freight (team driving is an arrangement where two drivers take turns to drive and the off duty driver sleeps
in the truck while the other is driving). My problem is that I am
unable to sleep in the truck while my lead driver is driving. The
shaking and vibration is too strong for me preventing sleep. The
accommodations provided by my employer are adequate as I have no
difficulty sleeping while the truck is parked and I feel no
discomfort. While the truck is moving, it moves me up and down on a
bumpy road and from side to side when it accelerates and stops. I have
informed my employer about this and my worry that I might cause a
serious accident if I drive without getting enough sleep. I feel that
I shouldn't drive if I am not getting enough sleep. I would rather do
another job. Can you give me your advice and recommendation?

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome to 'Ask A Doctor service'.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advise.

You are right. It's advisable to change job as proper sleep needed to maintain body healthy as well as to do job effectively also.

It's not advisable to take sleeping pills also considering your driving job.
Zolpidem is non addictive sleeping pill that can be used for insomnia that is induced by unaccustomed situation. But in few patient it can lead headache and drowsiness as side effects, so not recommended for your case.

It's not possible also to avoid jerks, shaking and movement while you are trying to sleep as you have team driving type duty.

So my final conclusion is better to change job.

Hope I have answered your question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
