Hi - I Injured Several Tendons In My Knee Last

Question: Hi - I injured several tendons in my knee last winter in a ski crash. I completely tore the ACL - was going to have it fixed, but Covid cancelled elective surgeries. I did a lot of physical therapy and my knee actually feels pretty strong now. But - I stepped off a long step a few days ago and hyperextended that knee. It is now sore in the back of my leg and fairly swollen. Is hyperextending a knee a common occurrence when you have no ACL? Suggestions on how to treat it?

Brief Answer:
Torn ACL decreases knee stability.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing to us.

With a torn ACL, the knee joint becomes slightly less stable and hyperextension can happen. As the knee is swollen and painful, it is suggestive of a soft tissue injury in the area. You need to get an MRI scan done to find the extent of damage you have suffered.

Till then avoid weight bearing on the knee and give it complete rest.

Hope this answer is helpful.
We can discuss this further in case you have any questions.
