Question: Hello ,
My father has leprosy.he has taken 1 year MDT treatment then after 3 months he got downgrading reactions.so doctor suggested wysolone treatment for 3 months starting from 70g to 5 mg.after all these treatment he was facing weakness in hands ,so doctor suggested 1 year MDT treatment again.He was taking MDT from past 5 moths,but now also he was facing more weakness and burning sensation ,dry skin , dry mouth ,itching ,swelling at ankle and foot if he sits for longer time.
could you please suggest any solution for these problems.

Leprosy is a chronic disease.
1 year MDT is usually sufficient to kill the bacteria however few bacteria remain latent and are reactivate once the medication is stopped.
In such cases MDT needs to continued for 2 to 3 years.
Dryness of mouth, itching and other things are side effects of MDT.
Ask him to long acting moisturizer such as Cetaphil liberally.
He can also take tablet methylcobalamine 1500 mcg daily for 6 months.
This will repair nerves and help him regain strength.

Got skin smear test negative .Do he needs to continue MDT as test results are negative.while taking MDT also he is facing mouth deviation to right side.why it is happening ? pls give ur valuable suggestions.

Smear negative is not confirmatory of recovery from disease hence MDT needs to be continued.
Mouth deviation is probably due to involvement of facial nerve.
This should resolve slowly with continuation of therapy.
