Question: Hello, I was taking phentermine for about two weeks. I had an episode of chest discomfort, and arm pain, also noted left leg weakness, I have not taken the medication in 4 days, chest discomfort is gone now, also noted slight shortness of breath when going up the stairs. I am concerned that I may have done permanent damage. Of note I only took 8 and a1/2 tablets, I am going to see my primary later today. I had no issues or heart problems prior, was not taking any other medications, did drink 1 6 oz cup of coffee

Brief Answer:
ECG will determine if there was permanent damage or if damage at all

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for using "Ask a doctor" service.

I read your query and I understand your concern.

Phentermine is indeed a medicine which cause ischemia im the heart, tachicardia en major cardiac muscle toxicity. If you didn't fell good with it, it was the right decision to stop using it.
Since you are feeling better, there is no urgent risk. You will need an ECG (electrocardiogram test) to determine what is going on with the heart - how is the rhythm now and in case the chest pain was ischemic if there is a permanent damage. I do not think that is the case, but it is goed to check.
Do not worry about the coffee because one cup does not cause problems to the heart.

I hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.
