Posted on Sat, 15 Feb 2020
Question: Hello,

I starting to feel my pulse in my right cheek a few days ago and then today, I started to also feel my pulse in my left cheek. This is more apparent at rest. I am really worried but I can’t get a neurology consult for a few weeks. Could this be something serious?

Brief Answer:
Not too serious.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to Ask a doctor's service.
I read your query and here is my advice.

I don't think you may need a neurological consult.
I want to know if you have other symptoms like running nose, blocked nose, blocked ears, because they can be causing it. Also any swelling on your face may cause it.
You don't need to see a doctor imediately but you can wait for your appointment . I don't think this can be too serious.

Hope I have answered the question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you. I do not have runny/stuffy nose but my ears have tinnitus in both ears and sometimes feel blocked where I have to yawn to "pop" it open. I am still waiting for audiology appointment for tinnitus and hearing assessment. I am scared that the pulsating or spasm in my cheeks may be something more serious related to heart problems.

I've tried the following: mouthguard, increasing magnesium intake, changing pillow, fixing posture, neck stretches, drinking more water, intermittent fasting

Brief Answer:
Not a heart problem but nerves issue.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear and thank you for asking again.
I don't think the pulsating or spasms may be related to heart issues.
If you are feeling the pulsation or heart beating it can be related to congestion in your ears which can also cause low hearing and tinnitus.
If the pulsating or spasms look more like twitching it can be related to nerve issues like facisl nerve compression or irritation . It is good you are using magnesium , keeping hydrated and improving posture and sleeping position.
Using camomile tea is also helpful.
Using muscle relaxants such baclofen may be helpful too.
ENT doctor appointment is necessary but you may also need to visit a neuropsychologyst.

Thank you for your answer. I have an appointment with a neurologist in 1 month, is that too long?

The feeling of pulses in my cheek is a minor annoyance but it is felt almost chronically. The cheek feels "heavy", then occasionally "flares up" with strong pulses that feel kind of like spasm but I'm not able to distinguish the difference.

How soon do you think I need to see an ENT?

Brief Answer:
You can wait for a month.

Detailed Answer:
I think this is not an emergency and it doesn't require medical attention imediately or ER.
You can wait for a month for neurological and ENT appointment.
The pulsation or twitching is a bit annoying and you have to take care to ease it at home.
Use warm compresses on your cheeks, keep yourself hydrated continue magnesium and camomile.
Don't drink coffee or other beverages containing caffeine.
